The National Open University of Nigeria and EFCC to introduce a course aimed at combating internet fraud – The course reportedly came to life after a proposal made by Ibrahim Magu, the acting chairman of the anti-graft agency – The EFCC expressed optimism that the course will among other things focus on the ethical use of the internet
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has partnered with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to introduce a course aimed at combating internet fraud better known as ‘yahoo yahoo.’
Abdalla Adamu, the university vice-chancellor, made this known during the launch of its Africa Centre of Excellence on Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL) in Abuja on Monday, July 22.

Aminu Gusau, director of organisational support at EFCC, had requested such course while identifying the university as a critical stakeholder in the fight against crime in Nigeria.
He said the request followed a proposal made by Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the anti-graft agency.
Muss Sufi His words: “Learning institutions is the best place to start engaging youths as partners in the fight against crime. “Whether we like it or not, you are real stakeholders in this fight against corruption.
We are trying to see best ways we can be able to collaborate. You are real stakeholders in this fight against corruption.”
While responding, Adamu lauded the initiative, saying it will send a strong message to internet fraudsters in Nigeria.
He decried the high rate of cyber-crime among youths and expressed optimism that the course will among other things focus on the ethical use of the internet.
He said: “Dr. Aminu has raised a very critical component which we have missed completely because we are just blinded by technology; the fact that technology is used many wrong ways.

That is why in Nigeria we have a lot of young boys as internet scammers, who scam people and get told money from them.
“So I think that it will be a very good idea if we include EFCC as part of inspectoral partners in other to develop a short course on ethics use of intern.”
On her part, president, Commonwealth of Learning, Vancouver, Canada, Professor Asha Kanwar, congratulated NOUN VC for the inauguration of the ACETEL and said that they would continue to use technology to expand learning in Nigeria and other 52 member countries.
The professor said: “Nigeria is a very active member of the Commonwealth and provides both financial and intellectual support and we have enjoyed the cooperation of several institutions in Nigeria which NOUN is one of them.
“We share with NOUN the common goal of promoting quality education for all with the use of technology for education and we have seen NOUN grown from its early beginning to become one of the key mega universities in the Commonwealth.
“NOUN is the leader in open and distance learning in the region and it is one of the regional centres of the Commonwealth and has played a major role in developing courses in advanced ICT skills.”
Nigerian Communications Commission, Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and mobile telecommunication companies are some of ACETEL partners.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the EFCC, on Thursday, July 11, said that the agency is at war with powerful forces in its crusade against corruption.
Magu stressed that despite stiff challenge from corrupt persons and gangs in the country, the agency is fixed on defeating corruption.
